Tissue Procurement: Bovine cartilage is derived from the metacarpalphalangeal joint (“knuckle”) of 18 month old cows. Alternately cartilage can be harvested from the stifle joint (“knee”) or nasal septum for an additional procurement fee.
Alginate Bead Processing: Cartilage is digested with a sequence of enzymes to isolate primary chondrocytes. The cells are combined with alginate gel and added drop-wise into a calcium salt bath to initiate polymerization. Alginate beads are recovered and distributed into multi-well plates or into the desired format with 50/50 DMEM/F12 media supplemented with 10% FBS. Alginate bead cultures are shipped with ice packs for overnight delivery. |
